Kim McGraw: Birches Weeks Art Gallery at Baltimore Woods
Price: Free Baltimore Woods Nature Center
4007 Bishop Hill Rd.,
Marcellus
"Birches" is an exhibit and sale of mixed media collage by Syracuse artist Kim McGraw. Having always been attracted to birch trees, McGraw found that simply drawing and painting them was not ultimately satisfying. Doing some research into birches revealed that birch bark was used in times past as a writing surface. This led to the idea of using newsprint in her mixed media collages to represent the birches. McGraw was awarded her BFA and MSAE from The Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, MA. She has exhibited her work both in Massachusetts and the greater Syracuse area. A permanent exhibit of her work is on display at Anyela's Vineyard in Skaneateles, The artist currently teaches art at Solvay High School and resides in Syracuse with her husband and son.

Pen and ink drawings of artist Ray Sax will be on display. The 57 drawings were created by Sax over a four year period that began in 1988 with a picnic to Lock 24 in Baldwinsville with his wife Betty. Enjoying the experience, they kept going from one lock to the next, Ray drawing each one. The exhibition of these drawings will bring new attention to the beauty and engineering of Barge Canal structures. Visitors to the exhibit will be reminded that the Erie Canal is not merely a thing of the past, but a remarkable body of water that connects east and west.

Julie Blackmon: Other Tales from Home Everson Museum of Art
Price: Suggested donation: $5 adults Everson Museum of Art
401 Harrison St.,
Syracuse
Authentic and dysfunctional, Julie Blackmon's photographs of family life strike a resonating chord in both children and adult viewers. Boys and girls run free in the backyard or the living room among scattered toys while preoccupied grown-ups hover on the edges. Inspired by humorous 17th-century Dutch paintings and her own childhood as the eldest of nine, Blackmon digitally reconstructs scenes of family life with humor and an eye for the underlying chaos. The exhibition contains selections from her past series, Domestic Vacations, along with photographs from her latest body of work.

For Syracuse, 2010: Selections of Truisms and Survival Urban Video Project
Syracuse Stage
820 E. Genesee St.,
Syracuse
Internationally renowned artist Jenny Holzer created "For Syracuse" as a site-specific installation that streams across the facade of Syracuse Stage on an LED curtain. The installation features 272 aphorisms from her celebrated series "Truisms, and Survival" that challenge viewer's assumptions about the world we live in through the use of language as art. Whether questioning consumerist impulses, or lamenting the struggles of daily living Jenny Holzer always provokes a response. Her work crosses the boundary between poetry and visual art, and suggests both the limitations and power of technology and the information age. For more than 30 years, this influential American conceptual artist has been creating subversive works that blend in among advertisements in public spaces questioning and confronting our passive consumption of information. Since the early 1970s, Holzer has been collecting and writing phrases and aphorisms found in literature, philosophy and contemporary culture. She calls these summaries her Truisms, and has printed them on bronze plaques, painted signs, stone benches, footstools, stickers, t-shirts, condoms, paintings, photographs, video, sound, light projection, and the Internet. In 1982, Holzer installed Truisms on one of Time Square's gigantic LED billboards. In the 1980s, for her Survival Series, Holzer adopted more personal and urgent messages about the realities of everyday living. Power, vulnerability, violence, tenderness, moral struggles and motherhood are courageously chronicled in this series which continuously prods the viewer to question the role of individuals in society.

Three well-known Central New York political cartoonists, Joe Glisson, Tim Atseff, and Frank Cammuso, are the featured cartoonists for an exhibition entitled "Take No Prisoners: Political Cartoons Over Time and Place." With insightful humor, these artists and their historic predecessors produced a wide variety of editorial cartoons that illustrated important issues of their time. Starting with cartoons from the Civil War era through the present day, "Take No Prisoners" is an opportunity to experience historic subjects as the current events they once were, and to see how election issues of the past compare with those of the present-day.

Syracuse
Scott Carey is a businessman who is on vacation on a boat, off the California coast, with his wife Louise when he suddenly becomes contaminated by a radioactive cloud. At the time, Louise was below deck, so she wasn't affected. Six months later, the previously 6-foot-tall man notices that his shirt seems too big. He blames it on the cleaners. He continues to get smaller and after visiting a laboratory an antidote is found. This briefly arrests his shrinking when is he just 36 inches tall. However, the antidote stops working and he continues to shrink. Eventually he is reduced to living in a dollhouse. After nearly being killed by his own cat, he winds up trapped in a basement and has to battle a voracious spider. The Incredible Shrinking Man won the very first Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation. Directed by Jack Arnold, 81 minutes, 1957.

The French say that a harpsichord string is pinched and not plucked. Come spend time with Andrew Appel and the Four Nations Ensemble and find out why the harpsichord was the most beloved of keyboard instruments for more than 200 years. Bach in Germany, Handel in England, Couperin and Rameau in France, and Scarlatti in Spain, loved the instrument and loved to play it alone and they loved it even more with a cello and a violin as friends. Maybe you will come away in love with the harpsichord and its pinched strings!

"Birches" is an exhibit and sale of mixed media collage by Syracuse artist Kim McGraw. Having always been attracted to birch trees, McGraw found that simply drawing and painting them was not ultimately satisfying.

The Other New York: 2012 is a community-wide, multi-venue biennial exhibition that is the result of a major collaboration among 12 art organizations in Syracuse. This ambitious project aims to highlight the rich talent of artists across Upstate New York, with a special focus on Central New York and the surrounding counties. The project will offer diverse arts venues and outdoor public spaces for contemporary creative expression on a scale not before seen in Syracuse. In addition, TONY: 2012 demonstrates the power of artistic partnerships to boost public awareness of the arts by presenting opportunities for the community to connect with exhibitions, programs, and events offered simultaneously throughout the city. TONY: 2012 is organized by the Everson Museum of Art in collaboration with ArtRage, Community Folk Art Center, Erie Canal Museum, Light Work, Punto de Contacto/Point of Contact, Red House Arts Center, Stone Quarry Hill Art Park, SUArt Galleries, Urban Video Project, The Warehouse Gallery, and the City of Syracuse. Alternative art spaces in the form of freight containers will provide temporary exhibition/installation sites. The containers will be strategically located in the city to link arts venues and encourage visitors to walk and experience art along the way. Community Folk Art Center TONY 2012 featured artists are Elizabeth Leader, Michael Moody, Abisay Puentes, Sandra Stephens, who each use their art to engage in a larger conversation about significant but often overlooked social issues, including racial identity and urban decay.

Artist Statement: "Through my drawings I am creating a personal image of reality. It is not a reproduction of nature buy my expression of my emotions, sensations, and feelings, how that unique place impresses me. A photographed image preserves a visual event, but a drawing can entail the experience of seeing, of understanding atmosphere and space. In my drawings I try, for a change, to see things in black and white. I believe it is the only way to explore a uniquely natural landscape. The black and white landscapes have an almost mystical charm that changes with the time of day and season." Claude Freeman is a Professor Emeritus at SUNY ESF where he taught Landscape Architecture for over 40 years. He now teaches drawing at the Art Department at OCC. Over many years his drawings have been accepted at numerous juried Art Shows including those at the Gibson Gallery in Potsdam, NY, the Lake Placid Center of the Arts in Lake Placid, NY, the Kirkland Art Center in Clinton, NY, Shelburne Farm's Art Exhibition in Shelburne, VT, and the Delavan Art Gallery, in Syracuse. Mr. Freeman has received a variety of awards and recognition for his artwork.

The exhibition of these drawings will bring new attention to the beauty and engineering of Barge Canal structures.
