Culture of the Cocktail Hour

The story of cocktail fashions has several associations with local history. This exhibit will discover some of those people, places and events, including Syracuse's most famous cocktail lounges of days gone by. Cocktails also conjure up the exciting era of the Roaring Twenties, when speakeasies flourished during the decade of Prohibition. Displays will include the story of one of the most famous local speakeasies, located just a few hundred feet from the OH Museum, including a menu of its libations, and the tale of the police raid that shut it down. Also on exhibit, along with other documents and artifacts of the era will be an original federal court ledger listing arrests and convictions across the state for Prohibition violations and a local brewery's recipes for "near beer" and flavored sodas, which helped keep them in business through the infamous "dry" years when America famously tried unsuccessfully to eliminate intoxicating beverages from its culture.

Ever a New Season: Works by 19th-Century Photographer George Barnard

During the nation's 150th anniversary observance of the Civil War, a Barnard exhibition makes sense. OHA owns a rare complete first edition of Barnard's Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign (1866), widely recognized as one of two foundational publications of 19th-century American photography. Barnard also lived in Oswego and Syracuse before the war and retired to Marcellus for his last decade. A technical innovator, commercial pioneer, and important taste-maker in one of our most pivotal periods, Barnard was also firmly rooted in the traditions and iconography of 19th-century American landscape painting, which equated national identity with the land and infused much of his work. "Ever a New Season" reintroduces an exciting early figure to a region already attuned to and highly literate in contemporary photography.

Son of the Genesee: Paintings by Stefan Zoller

Stefan Zoller is a graduate painting student in VPA's Department of Art. "Son of the Genesee" pays homage to the Genesee Valley of Western New York, where he was born and raised, and where he first painted.

Introduced to art by an older brother, Zoller took college art courses while still in high school. After receiving a bachelor of arts degree in studio art from Houghton College in 2008, he moved to Corning, NY, to work with renowned portrait painter Thomas S. Buechner. During two years studying representational painting with Buechner, Zoller also maintained a home studio practice, painting in the non-representational vein he had developed during his undergraduate experience.

Zoller recently had a solo exhibition at VPA's Michael Sickler Gallery. His recent group exhibitions include the 64th Rochester Finger Lakes Exhibition at Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester; the Southern Tier Biennial at Olean Public Library, Olean; and "Zoller & Ryder" at Atrium Gallery, Corning.

McCoubrey takes on the role of alchemist through her transmutation of the potato into mystical contraptions built to coast above the earth or journey along the desolate landscape. These delicately drawn mixed media works belong to a world of myths and fairytales and bring to mind artists, such as Hieronymous Bosch and Salvador Dali. "Sarah McCoubrey: Works on Paper" is part of the 2014 Edge of Art Series.

For nine years, beginning in 1960, Cloud Wampler donated some 170 Asian works to the Everson Museum. The collection is dominated by a particularly strong core of Chinese ceramics. Spanning nearly 2,000 years, from the Han Dynasty in 200 BCE to the Ching Dynasty that ended in 1912, this selection offers a survey of forms, styles and glazes that are considered still today to be the pinnacle of aesthetic and technical achievements.

The Everson Biennial returns in 2014 with the Edge of Art Series. The first artist featured is Mary Giehl. Known for her innovation with both materials and concepts, Giehl turns her focus to world hunger in this installation. The sculptural bowls are made from rice and water, the food that so much of the world relies on for nourishment. The bowls are suspended from a world map, which illustrates globally the areas where hunger is greatest and populations rely on rice to live.

Buckingham's triple arch pavilion, Secret Invitation, is informed by an 8-year bicycle trip the artist took around the world. Immersed in the history of the Silk Road, which facilitated the transmission of goods, ideas, culture, and religion, Buckingham's social sculpture is intended to serve as a space to meet people from our community, share stories and even, as the artist suggests, fall in love. "Daniel Buckingham: Secret Invitation" is part of The Edge of Art Series.

New and recent collages and oil paintings by artist Andrea Deschambeault-Porter. Working intuitively, the artist develops a vibrant pictorial experience by moving between abstraction and representation of various subjects such as still life, landscape, and the figure, involving some combination of conscious and unconscious thought.

Andrea Deschambeault-Porter lives and works Manlius. She grew up in the Catskills Mountain region of NY, and received her BFA from SUNY Purchase and her MFA from Syracuse University. She studied in Venice, Italy, for a year in 1984. This is her first exhibition at Gallery 4040.

Proof Through the Night: The Black & White Work of Paul Pearce

"Proof Through the Night" is a retrospective of traditional silver-based photography and lithographs by Paul Pearce, a certified disabled combat veteran who now declares himself to be a "backward observer." His photography focuses on issues of war and morality and questions the very notion of civilization. In his words about what inspires him to photograph he states, "In spite of growing cynicism, I have a calling to declare a point of view, a mandate to cry out that (in my opinion), the sky is falling, and a gnawing need to expose a system that turns innocent children into monsters."

Pearce was raised as an All-American boy, Sunday school attendee and college-bound Eagle Scout. He was drafted into the Army, commissioned as an artillery Lieutenant and ordered into combat in Vietnam as a forward observer with the 114th infantry. He returned from the war motivated to raise consciousness about the evils of war. Armed with a camera and a printing press he taught himself photography, struggled for peace and justice as an artist and anti-war activist, and participated in and documented antiwar protests including the massive action in Syracuse following the killings at Kent State.

Some Like it Hot whirls through the flamboyant settings of Chicago and Miami Beach in 1929. Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe) is a ukulele-playing vocalist in an all-girl band. Two musicians (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon) on the run from the mob join Sugar's traveling troupe by hilariously donning make-up and dresses to hide their identity.

Julia Goodwin is a high school sophomore from Upstate New York, and the winner of Michael Feinstein's 2013 Great American Songbook High School Vocal Competition. Currently serving as the Junior Ambassador for the Great American Songbook, Ms Goodwin has opened for, and performed nationally with 5-time Grammy-nominee Michael Feinstein at Birdland jazz club in midtown Manhattan, and at The Palladium in Indiana. Julia was selected to perform at the New World Center in Miami, where she was a finalist in the 2014 National Young Arts Foundation Competition for Vocal Pop, and where she was also recognized in the 2014 National Young arts Vocal Jazz discipline.

At Stage 72 at the Triad Theater in New York City , Julia joined an A-list of multiple award-winning singers from the worlds of Jazz, Broadway and Cabaret that included Laurel Masse, Amra-Faye Wright , Marilyn Maye and others honoring the music of composer Larry Kerchner. She recently shared the stage with the Louisville Orchestra at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts' Robert S Whitney Hall, and has also performed with the Palladium's Big Band at the Center for the Performing Arts in Indiana, and with multi-platinum recording artist Benny Mardones.

Julia has also been featured on CBS's "Inside Edition" and on the ABC broadcast special "Extraordinary" hosted by Carrie Lazarus.

Guitarist, producer, composer and arranger Mark Doyle has had an impressive decades-long and bordering-on-unprecedented run in the national music industry, establishing himself in a variety of disciplines and genres, in a storied career that has witnessed him dabbling in Pop production (New Kids on The Block), Rock (Jukin Bone), Blues (Mark Doyle & The Maniacs) and Jazz (Guitar Noir)...in a stellar career that has firmly established him as a legend on the Syracuse music scene.

Raised by musical parents, and the son of legendary Syracuse jazz man Bobby Doyle, Mark began appearing on local TV and radio shows by age 10. His last appearance at Jazz Fest came in 2004 when he shared the Jazz Fest stage that year with Richie Havens, The Neville Brothers and the great Lou Rawls. This year, he returns with his critically-acclaimed Guitar Noir Project featuring keyboardist Bill DiCosimo, percussionist Josh Dekaney, bassist Edgar Pagan, fellow guitarist Terry Quill and an ensemble that will also feature the Guitar Noir string section.

Commonly recognized as one of the best live stage performance bands on the planet, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy also continues to craft great studio albums--10 in all--that match the intensity of their legendary live shows.

The multi-platinum selling, Grammy-nominated band that hails from Los Angeles helped pioneer the retro swing jump blues revival of the 90s that featured groups like Squirrel Nut Zippers, Royal Crown Review, and The Brian Setzer Orchestra, bands that melded the swing style of the big bands of the 30s and 40s with the exciting and electrifying jump blues style of artists that followed like the legendary Louie Prima and Louis Jordan.

Since their arrival on the music scene in 1993 in a legendary residency at LA's Derby nightclub, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, named famously after an autograph by blues legend Albert Collins, has sold millions of records, and their music has been featured in hundreds of movies and TV shows.

New Orleans native Trombone Shorty began his career as a bandleader at the young age of six, toured internationally at age 12, and spent his teens playing with various brass bands throughout New Orleans and touring worldwide with Lenny Kravitz. He is currently the front man for his own ensemble Orleans Avenue, a funk/rock/jazz/hip-hop band.

Together, Trombone Shorty and the band have toured across the U.S., Europe, Australia, Russia, Japan and Brazil. In 2010, Trombone Shorty released his debut album, the Grammy-nominated "Backatown," followed by "For True" in 2011, which topped Billboard magazine's Contemporary Jazz Chart for 12 weeks. His newest album, "Say That to This," was released in 2013 and features funk/jazz elements of New Orleans.

Trombone Shorty appeared in several episodes of HBO's "Treme," and has recently appeared on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel Live," "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" and "Conan." In 2012, he performed at the White House in honor of Black History Month with music royalty such as B.B. King, Mick Jagger, Jeff Beck and Booker T. Jones. At this year's Grammy Awards, he performed alongside Madonna, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and Mary Lambert. In 2012, he received the President's Medal from Tulane University in recognition of his charitable work with the Trombone Shorty Foundation. In collaboration with New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, the Trombone Shorty Foundation donates quality instruments to schools across New Orleans.

For nine years, beginning in 1960, Cloud Wampler donated some 170 Asian works to the Everson Museum. The collection is dominated by a particularly strong core of Chinese ceramics. Spanning nearly 2,000 years, from the Han Dynasty in 200 BCE to the Ching Dynasty that ended in 1912, this selection offers a survey of forms, styles and glazes that are considered still today to be the pinnacle of aesthetic and technical achievements.

The Everson Biennial returns in 2014 with the Edge of Art Series. The first artist featured is Mary Giehl. Known for her innovation with both materials and concepts, Giehl turns her focus to world hunger in this installation. The sculptural bowls are made from rice and water, the food that so much of the world relies on for nourishment. The bowls are suspended from a world map, which illustrates globally the areas where hunger is greatest and populations rely on rice to live.

Stefan Zoller is a graduate painting student in VPA's Department of Art. "Son of the Genesee" pays homage to the Genesee Valley of Western New York, where he was born and raised, and where he first painted.

Introduced to art by an older brother, Zoller took college art courses while still in high school. After receiving a bachelor of arts degree in studio art from Houghton College in 2008, he moved to Corning, NY, to work with renowned portrait painter Thomas S. Buechner. During two years studying representational painting with Buechner, Zoller also maintained a home studio practice, painting in the non-representational vein he had developed during his undergraduate experience.

Zoller recently had a solo exhibition at VPA's Michael Sickler Gallery. His recent group exhibitions include the 64th Rochester Finger Lakes Exhibition at Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester; the Southern Tier Biennial at Olean Public Library, Olean; and "Zoller & Ryder" at Atrium Gallery, Corning.

"Proof Through the Night" is a retrospective of traditional silver-based photography and lithographs by Paul Pearce, a certified disabled combat veteran who now declares himself to be a "backward observer." His photography focuses on issues of war and morality and questions the very notion of civilization. In his words about what inspires him to photograph he states, "In spite of growing cynicism, I have a calling to declare a point of view, a mandate to cry out that (in my opinion), the sky is falling, and a gnawing need to expose a system that turns innocent children into monsters."

Pearce was raised as an All-American boy, Sunday school attendee and college-bound Eagle Scout. He was drafted into the Army, commissioned as an artillery Lieutenant and ordered into combat in Vietnam as a forward observer with the 114th infantry. He returned from the war motivated to raise consciousness about the evils of war. Armed with a camera and a printing press he taught himself photography, struggled for peace and justice as an artist and anti-war activist, and participated in and documented antiwar protests including the massive action in Syracuse following the killings at Kent State.

The story of cocktail fashions has several associations with local history. This exhibit will discover some of those people, places and events, including Syracuse's most famous cocktail lounges of days gone by. Cocktails also conjure up the exciting era of the Roaring Twenties, when speakeasies flourished during the decade of Prohibition. Displays will include the story of one of the most famous local speakeasies, located just a few hundred feet from the OH Museum, including a menu of its libations, and the tale of the police raid that shut it down. Also on exhibit, along with other documents and artifacts of the era will be an original federal court ledger listing arrests and convictions across the state for Prohibition violations and a local brewery's recipes for "near beer" and flavored sodas, which helped keep them in business through the infamous "dry" years when America famously tried unsuccessfully to eliminate intoxicating beverages from its culture.

During the nation's 150th anniversary observance of the Civil War, a Barnard exhibition makes sense. OHA owns a rare complete first edition of Barnard's Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign (1866), widely recognized as one of two foundational publications of 19th-century American photography. Barnard also lived in Oswego and Syracuse before the war and retired to Marcellus for his last decade. A technical innovator, commercial pioneer, and important taste-maker in one of our most pivotal periods, Barnard was also firmly rooted in the traditions and iconography of 19th-century American landscape painting, which equated national identity with the land and infused much of his work. "Ever a New Season" reintroduces an exciting early figure to a region already attuned to and highly literate in contemporary photography.

Nick Ziobro, the 17 year-old pop/jazz vocal sensation from Upstate NY, released his debut album "A Lot of Livin' to Do" in May, produced by Michael Feinstein--the two-time Emmy and five-time Grammy Award-nominated vocalist, pianist and musicologist.

Nick, who has been hailed as "a budding young talent" by LA Weekly and praised for his "dreamy phrasing and perfect pitch" by Rex Reed in the New York Observer, performed a special CD release concert at Birdland Jazz Club in NYC.

A Lot of Livin' to Do features an impressive lineup of jazz veterans including Tedd Firth on piano, Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar, Jay Leonhart on bass, Ray Marchica on drums, Brian Pareschi on trumpet and flugelhorn, and Marc Phaneuf on saxophone and clarinet. The album has liner notes by Michael Feinstein and photography by Shervin Lainez (Sara Bareilles, Melody Gardot, Sandra Bernhard).

Nick first launched his burgeoning career as the winner of the 2012 Great American Songbook High School Vocal Academy and Competition at age 16. The native of upstate New York spent a year serving as the Youth Ambassador of the Great American Songbook.

He made his New York debut at Feinstein's at the Regency onstage with Michael Feinstein, Barbara Cook and Marilyn Maye. Nick's national tour with Feinstein included performances at the Pasadena Pops (sharing the stage with Marvin Hamlisch in the conductor/composer's final performances), Benaroya Hall in Seattle, Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, The Nugget in Reno, the Napa Valley Opera House and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.

Nick also performed at the inaugural induction gala for the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame alongside Barry Manilow, Andrea McArdle, Clay Aiken and Lari White. Recent highlights include performing at the Mabel Mercer Foundation's Sammy Cahn Tribute at Jazz at Lincoln Center, ranking as a finalist in New York's Noël Coward Foundation Award and singing the National Anthem at the Indianapolis Colts game. Nick also performed alongside jazz stars Hilary Kole, Eric Comstock and Laurel Massé for a special benefit for The Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative.

Igor Butman & the 18-piece Moscow Jazz Orchestra featuring Russian female jazz pop vocalist Fantine is the hottest jazz orchestra in Russia and one of the best jazz big bands in the world.

At ease with performing the traditional big band sound and style of the 40s and 50s, the Moscow Big Band is also known for its contemporary big band arrangements of compositions by contemporary jazz greats like Grover Washington Jr.

Founded in 1999 by world famous Russian reedman and jazz saxophonist Igor Butman, the Igor Butman Orchestra became The Moscow State Jazz Orchestra conducted by Igor Butman in 2012. Since then, the popular Russian Big Band has frequently toured Russia, Europe, and the USA, appearing at the world's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, in addition to sold out appearances at Manhattan's top jazz clubs, including "Birdland" and "Le Poisson Rouge."

A special collaboration between the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, led by iconic jazz trumpeter and jazz legend Wynton Marsalis, and the Igor Butman Big Band, caused a sensation in the jazz world, when new music by both bandleaders, and arrangements of traditional Russian folk songs were premiered by both artists' big bands at the prestigious Jazz At Lincoln Center.

In July 2013, the Moscow State Jazz Orchestra conducted a major European tour, and performed at many of the world's largest and most prestigious jazz festivals, including Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy, Jazz a Juan in France, and the Wigan Jazz Festival in Great Britain.

The Butman Music label released Special Opinion, a sensational new album by MSJO pianist and arranger Nick Levinovsky and the Igor Butman Orchestra last November. The critically acclaimed CD was recorded at the historic Avatar Studios in New York with A-List fusion and jazz rock superstar drummer Dave Weckl, guitarists Mike Stern and Mitch Stein, saxophonist player Bill Evans, trumpeter Randy Brecker and bassist Tom Kennedy.

Kambuyu Marimba Ensemble plays music with its roots in the traditional Shona songs and rhythms of Zimbabwe. The ensemble instruments include seven marimbas: three sopranos, two tenors, one baritone and one bass. The marimbas are accompanied by hosho, or gourd rattles, and sometimes drums.

Better Than Bowling is a rockin' rhythm and blues band with a little bit of country. Ever since the 20th century turned into the 21st, singer-songwriter and guitarist Raul Midón has earned international renown as one of music's most distinctive and searching voices.

The New Mexico native, blind since birth, followed a musical path inspired by his father, a professional Argentine folkloric dancer. Midón has released seven albums since 1999, including the hit studio productions State of Mind, A World Within a World and Synthesis. Midón's most recent release is the captivating Invisible Chains – Live from NYC, which documents an intimate concert at Joe's Pub in 2012. Attuned listeners can hear the inspirations of Donny Hathaway and Richie Havens in Midón's work, as well as those of Sting and Paul Simon, but Midón's questing musicality makes him beyond category.

Along with some of the most adventuresome solo music of his career, his on-stage and studio projects have included collaborations with soul icon Bill Withers, R&B singer-songwriter Lizz Wright, Cameroonian jazz bassist Richard Bona and neo-soul great India Arie. In global music circles, Midón has established a solid reputation and made a name for himself touring and performing at major jazz festivals throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan. After 15 years in Miami and 7 in New York City, Midón has called Maryland home for the past 5 years, and after 3 major-label albums, Raul is an artist whose time has come and someone whose shooting star continues to rise in the musical stratosphere.

His undisputed reign as King of the Blues has lasted as long as that of any monarch on earth, and for more than half a century, Riley B. King – better known as B.B. King – has literally defined the Blues. A living legend, household name, and an iconic entertainer and performer, Mr. King is also a platinum-selling recording artist with over sixty albums to his credit, that include six halls of fame, including countless classic hits like "The Thrill Is Gone."

For his multiple musical and cultural achievements, Mr. King has been inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Grammys Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He has also received NARAS' Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award along with the Songwriter's Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award and the Orville H. Gibson Lifetime Achievement Award from the Gibson Guitar Company.

In addition to being the recipient of numerous Honorary Doctorate degrees from the world's most prestigious colleges and universities, Mr. King has also received 17 Grammy Awards and been nominated for 23.

Born in Mississippi, at a young age Mr. King played on street corners for dimes, and would sometimes play in as many as four towns a night. After decades of performing, he is still singing and playing the blues with relentless passion.

B.B.'s first big break came in 1948 when he performed on Sonny Boy Williamson's radio program on KWEM out of West Memphis, and in 1956, when B.B. and his band began touring nationally, they played an astonishing 342 one-night stands. From the 'chitlin circuit' with its small-town cafes, juke joints, and rural dance halls, to rock palaces, symphony concert halls, major universities, and the world's greatest opera houses, to swanky resort hotels and amphitheaters, nationally and internationally, B.B. King has become the most renowned blues musician of the past 50 years.

Over the years, B.B., whose instantly recognizable vocal style has never been equalled, has also developed one of the world's most identifiable and signature guitar styles, characterized by precise and complex vocal-like string bends and left hand vibrato, both techniques that have become indispensable components of every major rock guitarist's vocabulary, from Eric Clapton to the late Stevie Ray Vaughan.

As an artist, B.B. King, who has mixed traditional blues, jazz, swing, mainstream pop and jump to form his own unique sound and signature style continues to tour extensively, averaging over 250 concerts per year around the world.

During the nation's 150th anniversary observance of the Civil War, a Barnard exhibition makes sense. OHA owns a rare complete first edition of Barnard's Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign (1866), widely recognized as one of two foundational publications of 19th-century American photography. Barnard also lived in Oswego and Syracuse before the war and retired to Marcellus for his last decade. A technical innovator, commercial pioneer, and important taste-maker in one of our most pivotal periods, Barnard was also firmly rooted in the traditions and iconography of 19th-century American landscape painting, which equated national identity with the land and infused much of his work. "Ever a New Season" reintroduces an exciting early figure to a region already attuned to and highly literate in contemporary photography.

The story of cocktail fashions has several associations with local history. This exhibit will discover some of those people, places and events, including Syracuse's most famous cocktail lounges of days gone by. Cocktails also conjure up the exciting era of the Roaring Twenties, when speakeasies flourished during the decade of Prohibition. Displays will include the story of one of the most famous local speakeasies, located just a few hundred feet from the OH Museum, including a menu of its libations, and the tale of the police raid that shut it down. Also on exhibit, along with other documents and artifacts of the era will be an original federal court ledger listing arrests and convictions across the state for Prohibition violations and a local brewery's recipes for "near beer" and flavored sodas, which helped keep them in business through the infamous "dry" years when America famously tried unsuccessfully to eliminate intoxicating beverages from its culture.

Stefan Zoller is a graduate painting student in VPA's Department of Art. "Son of the Genesee" pays homage to the Genesee Valley of Western New York, where he was born and raised, and where he first painted.

Introduced to art by an older brother, Zoller took college art courses while still in high school. After receiving a bachelor of arts degree in studio art from Houghton College in 2008, he moved to Corning, NY, to work with renowned portrait painter Thomas S. Buechner. During two years studying representational painting with Buechner, Zoller also maintained a home studio practice, painting in the non-representational vein he had developed during his undergraduate experience.

Zoller recently had a solo exhibition at VPA's Michael Sickler Gallery. His recent group exhibitions include the 64th Rochester Finger Lakes Exhibition at Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester; the Southern Tier Biennial at Olean Public Library, Olean; and "Zoller & Ryder" at Atrium Gallery, Corning.

"Proof Through the Night" is a retrospective of traditional silver-based photography and lithographs by Paul Pearce, a certified disabled combat veteran who now declares himself to be a "backward observer." His photography focuses on issues of war and morality and questions the very notion of civilization. In his words about what inspires him to photograph he states, "In spite of growing cynicism, I have a calling to declare a point of view, a mandate to cry out that (in my opinion), the sky is falling, and a gnawing need to expose a system that turns innocent children into monsters."

Pearce was raised as an All-American boy, Sunday school attendee and college-bound Eagle Scout. He was drafted into the Army, commissioned as an artillery Lieutenant and ordered into combat in Vietnam as a forward observer with the 114th infantry. He returned from the war motivated to raise consciousness about the evils of war. For nine years, beginning in 1960, Cloud Wampler donated some 170 Asian works to the Everson Museum. The collection is dominated by a particularly strong core of Chinese ceramics. Spanning nearly 2,000 years, from the Han Dynasty in 200 BCE to the Ching Dynasty that ended in 1912, this selection offers a survey of forms, styles and glazes that are considered still today to be the pinnacle of aesthetic and technical achievements.

"Proof Through the Night" is a retrospective of traditional silver-based photography and lithographs by Paul Pearce, a certified disabled combat veteran who now declares himself to be a "backward observer." His photography focuses on issues of war and morality and questions the very notion of civilization. In his words about what inspires him to photograph he states, "In spite of growing cynicism, I have a calling to declare a point of view, a mandate to cry out that (in my opinion), the sky is falling, and a gnawing need to expose a system that turns innocent children into monsters."

Pearce was raised as an All-American boy, Sunday school attendee and college-bound Eagle Scout. He was drafted into the Army, commissioned as an artillery Lieutenant and ordered into combat in Vietnam as a forward observer with the 114th infantry. He returned from the war motivated to raise consciousness about the evils of war. Armed with a camera and a printing press he taught himself photography, struggled for peace and justice as an artist and anti-war activist, and participated in and documented antiwar protests including the massive action in Syracuse following the killings at Kent State.

Nives Marzocchi hails from north of Pisa, Italy. She first studied with the late Carolyn Berry of Manlius before studying painting and then sculpting with Rodger Mack and Mary Giehl at Syracuse University. She graduated as a sculptor from SU in 2004 and continues to both paint and sculpt working with various media, including acrylic, oil, pastel, watercolor, pencil, wood, metal, fiber, ceramics and bronze. Her work has been exhibited in various locales in the area including Beehive Gallery, Edgewood Gallery, and the Celebration of the Arts at St. David's, and she simply loves what she is doing.

Gallery 4040 is proud to present "Colors of Summer," an invitational group exhibition celebrating the season. While taking into account this season's range of colors from lushness to scorched earth, this exhibition combines an accomplished group of established and emerging artists including Scott Bennett (acrylic paintings), Diana Godfrey (acrylic mixed media), Walter Melnikow (acrylic paintings), Jim Ridlon (acrylic and mixed media collage paintings), and Debb VanDelinder (Scanography on aluminum). Curated by Anne Novado of Cappuccilli Fine Art.

Maxwell, the platinum soul star known for his show-stopping performances, is a singer and songwriter lauded for his impeccable vocals, his connection to his audience, and the sheer physicality of his performance.
