AbStranded: Fiber and Abstraction in Contemporary Art

AbStranded brings together contemporary American artists who use fiber-based materials to investigate the complex lineage of abstraction. A prominent use of the hand looms large — through knitting, weaving, quilting, and more — and suggests an alternative mode of communication within a digital society. Together, the works reveal how artists employ the language of abstraction to speak about the intertwined histories and politics of craft, race, and gender.

Veterans Creative Arts Festival

Across the country, Department of Veterans Affairs facilities incorporate creative arts into their therapy programs to help veterans recover from and cope with physical and emotional disabilities. The National Veterans Creative Arts Festival is an annual celebration of the progress and recovery made through that therapy and is a way to recognize the creative achievements of our nation's veterans. The competition begins at a local level, where veterans enrolled in VA health care facilities submit work in visual arts categories ranging from oil painting to leatherwork, as well as categories in the performing arts and creative writing. First, second, and third place entries are awarded for each category, and the competition culminates in a national exhibition featuring selected gold medal winners. A selection of the participants from the Syracuse VA Medical Center are displayed at the Everson.

Syracuse-based Iroquois China began as a manufacturer of Victorian fine china, but produced revolutionary dinnerware in the postwar era by designers like Russel Wright and Ben Seibel. In the magic-comic On the Lake, playwright Reza de Wet revisits Anton Chekhov's The Seagull, with an eye on exposing the tensions beneath the surface of the Chekhovian world. Zooming in on Constantine's symbolist play-within-the-play, de Wet imagines the experience from Nina's perspective: a dreamlike vision of the future, where the hope of escape is linked directly to the potential for the theater itself to rise up and fly away.

AJR: The Neotheater World Tour-Part 2

Insightful lyrical confessions, alternative ambition, earnest charm, D.I.Y. songcraft, and magnetic pop choruses ushered AJR to mainstream ubiquity just under the radar.

Since their 2013 independent debut Living Room, the New York trio of brothers—Adam [bass, vocals], Jack [vocals, guitar], and Ryan [ukulele, piano, vocals]—quietly transformed into an international phenomenon. By 2019, the group earned RIAA platinum certifications for breakout singles "I'm Ready" and "Weak" and gold certifications for "Burn The House Down" and "Sober Up" [feat. Rivers Cuomo] as well as for their 2017 sophomore full-length The Click [AJR Productions/S-Curve/BMG]. Not to mention, they generated upwards of 1 billion streams worldwide and 120 million YouTube views for the latter in less than two years. The band also landed two songs, "Burn The House Down" and "Sober Up," on Billboard's "Top 10 Alternative Songs of the Year." Beyond selling over 100,000 tickets for the 2018 Click Tour, they graced the stages of festivals such as Forecastle, Reading, Leeds, and Bumbershoot and have a busy Summer ahead at Bottlerock, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and more. Plus, they garnered features from Time, Nylon, Paper, and Billboard in addition to performing on Jimmy Kimmel LIVE!, Good Morning America and TODAY, to name a few.
