Fences is the sixth chapter in August Wilson's groundbreaking 10-play cycle of the African-American experience in the 20th century. The play depicts the life of Troy Maxson, a former Negro League baseball player, thwarted in his dreams of a Major League career, who struggles to provide for his family and break free from the boundaries imposed upon him. But in 1957, his son Cory, an emerging football star, sees the world through very different eyes, and his wife Rose yearns for an outlet for her love. With the intersection of old prejudices and changing opportunities, Fences is a powerful drama filled with passionate love and thundering rage, generous laughter and searing pain.

Music of Spain and Cuba from the 16th to 19th centuries, performed by Tropos (Liamna Pestana and Daniel Yost) and Cuban lutenist Manuel Paneque, on instruments that show the evolution of the guitar. The guitar's importance and presence over many centuries reflect its place as the national instrument of Spain, and the passion it excited in the rest of Europe. The guitar generated a proliferation of diverse and varied related instruments played over the centuries in Latin America, including the Cuban lute that will Manuel Paneque will play in this concert.

Cold Read concludes with a reading of the play-in-progress My Two Cents: A Personal Discourse on Luis Buñuel's Dos Centavos, The Recently Discovered Unfinished Masterpiece of Mexico's Golden Age of Cinema, by the festival playwright-in-residence Octavio Solis. Locally crafted beers from Buried Acorn and food will be available. Followed by a moderated post-reading talkback.

Octavio Solis has written more than 20 plays and has been produced at more than 25 theatres nationwide including Yale Repertory Theater, Mark Taper Forum, Denver Center Theater, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. His memoir Retablos: Stories From A Life Lived Along The Border was released in October 2018 and recounts his childhood in El Paso, Texas. Solis served as a cultural consultant on the Disney Pixar film Coco.

When we last met Eugene Jerome, he was coping with adolescence in 1930s Brooklyn. Here, he is a young army recruit during WWII, going through basic training and learning about Life and Love with a capital "L" along with some harsher lessons, while stationed at boot camp in Biloxi, Mississippi, in 1943.
