Immigration Dialogue, a new play by Building Company Theater, began as a response to President Obama's Farewell Address, in which he said of existing threats to democracy: "And increasingly, we become so secure in our bubbles that we accept only information, whether true or not, that fits our opinions, instead of basing our opinions on the evidence that's out there ... Ultimately, that's what our democracy demands. It needs you ... If you're tired of arguing with strangers on the Internet, try to talk with one in real life." At the center of Immigration Dialogue stands a series of intertwining perspectives on immigration gathered through conversations with a variety of people from different Central New York communities. It is an original ensemble-based work that uses a combination of theatrical styles to knit together into colorful incoherence, the myriad of kaleidoscopic perspectives currently driving the national debate on immigration — and on what it means to be an American.
