We Remember Them: The Legacy of Pan Am Flight 103

The bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, on December 21, 1988 claimed the lives of 270 individuals from 21 nations. Among those lost were 35 students returning home from a semester abroad through Syracuse University. This exhibition of materials donated to the Pan Am Flight 103/Lockerbie Air Disaster by the victims' families, friends, advocates, and affected communities commemorates the 30th anniversary of the tragedy through an exploration of the ways in which the lives of the victims have been remembered. Whether through scholarship, public advocacy, art, or physical memorials, we ensure their lives and the lessons learned from their deaths are not forgotten.

"in the clearing.", curated by Evan Starling-Davis, is a multidisciplinary art installation exploring the emotional ripple effects of individuals residing within systemic gun violence of America's Rust Belt region. Interrogating the extremities of a community, the ensemble of work combines elements of literature, video art, collage, painting, and audio clippings to framework a sensoria of storytelling— or the sum of one's perception to interpret environment via staged narrative.

Rodrigo Valenzuela's work boldly addresses themes of labor, power, and representation. For a Chilean artist living in America at a moment in which the president of the United States continues pressing for a border wall, the underlying narrative of Valenzuela's work — of immigration and the struggles of the working class — is as charged as ever.

The title of the exhibition, American Type, refers to a 1955 essay in which art critic Clement Greenberg frames the work of abstract expressionist painters such as Pollock, Kline, Motherwell, and Rothko as distinctly American. Greenberg proposed that post-war American painting was more about the act of painting itself than about any complex idea of representation. Valenzuela finds it interesting to challenge this concept and, as he puts it, to contemplate "how much the absence of content has become the American gold." He doesn't argue that abstraction is necessarily without subject or emotion, but Valenzuela questions Greenberg and art world elitism more generally by making his own subversive abstractions that he imbues with social-political meaning.

Valenzuela's approach to representation in his work draws our attention to the extensive labor of his artistic process. Every aspect of his work shows a trace of his own labor, from the building of studio assemblages, to the photographic steps that lead to the final prints. Even the wooden frames that hold the work have been cut, assembled, and painted by his hand. Labor is inherent in the making of all art, but for Valenzuela it becomes a compelling central subject.

Founded in 1875, the Social Art Club is a women's club dedicated to the study of art in a group setting. The Club has an extensive history of supporting the Everson, including financial support for the acquisition of some of the Museum's most iconic pieces, such as Adrian Saxe's Untitled vessel from 1980, which graces the cover of the Museum's American Ceramics catalog. Over the past decade, the Social Art Club's gifts have strengthened the Everson's connections to Central New York through donations of work by indigenous and regional artists.

The smash comedy hit of the London and Broadway stages, this much-revived classic from Noel Coward, the playwright of Private Lives, offers up fussy, cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine, re-married but haunted (literally) by the ghost of his late first wife, the clever and insistent Elvira who is called up by a visiting "happy medium," one Madame Arcati. As the (worldly and un-) personalities clash, Charles' current wife, Ruth, is accidentally killed, "passes over," joins Elvira, and the two "blithe spirits" haunt the hapless Charles into perpetuity.

The two witty songwriters play off each other live, often leaving the audience howling with laughter with their between-song banter. Lynn Miles has a slight edge in the humor department, not surprising given Lynne Hanson's burden of a lifetime of carrying the weight of a superfluous E. In addition to their beautiful harmonies, the two are skilled multi-instrumental musicians (acoustic and electric guitars, piano, harmonica, mandolin, percussion).

Miles is one of Canada's most accomplished singer/songwriters, with fourteen albums to her credit, the winner of four Canadian Folk Music awards (including 2011 English Songwriter of the Year), and a 2003 Juno Award for Roots and Traditional Solo Album of the Year. Her song "Black Flowers" appeared on Claire Lynch's Grammy-nominated album "North By South."

Hanson has been playing her brand of "porch music with a little red dirt" for the past 10 years, has released 6 albums, won the Colleen Peterson Award for songwriting, and been nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award.

Rodrigo Valenzuela's work boldly addresses themes of labor, power, and representation. For a Chilean artist living in America at a moment in which the president of the United States continues pressing for a border wall, the underlying narrative of Valenzuela's work — of immigration and the struggles of the working class — is as charged as ever.

The title of the exhibition, American Type, refers to a 1955 essay in which art critic Clement Greenberg frames the work of abstract expressionist painters such as Pollock, Kline, Motherwell, and Rothko as distinctly American. Greenberg proposed that post-war American painting was more about the act of painting itself than about any complex idea of representation. Valenzuela finds it interesting to challenge this concept and, as he puts it, to contemplate "how much the absence of content has become the American gold." He doesn't argue that abstraction is necessarily without subject or emotion, but Valenzuela questions Greenberg and art world elitism more generally by making his own subversive abstractions that he imbues with social-political meaning.

Valenzuela's approach to representation in his work draws our attention to the extensive labor of his artistic process. Every aspect of his work shows a trace of his own labor, from the building of studio assemblages, to the photographic steps that lead to the final prints. Even the wooden frames that hold the work have been cut, assembled, and painted by his hand. Labor is inherent in the making of all art, but for Valenzuela it becomes a compelling central subject.

The bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, on December 21, 1988 claimed the lives of 270 individuals from 21 nations. Among those lost were 35 students returning home from a semester abroad through Syracuse University. This exhibition of materials donated to the Pan Am Flight 103/Lockerbie Air Disaster by the victims' families, friends, advocates, and affected communities commemorates the 30th anniversary of the tragedy through an exploration of the ways in which the lives of the victims have been remembered. Whether through scholarship, public advocacy, art, or physical memorials, we ensure their lives and the lessons learned from their deaths are not forgotten.

Rodrigo Valenzuela's work boldly addresses themes of labor, power, and representation. For a Chilean artist living in America at a moment in which the president of the United States continues pressing for a border wall, the underlying narrative of Valenzuela's work — of immigration and the struggles of the working class — is as charged as ever.

The title of the exhibition, American Type, refers to a 1955 essay in which art critic Clement Greenberg frames the work of abstract expressionist painters such as Pollock, Kline, Motherwell, and Rothko as distinctly American. Greenberg proposed that post-war American painting was more about the act of painting itself than about any complex idea of representation. Founded in 1875, the Social Art Club is a women's club dedicated to the study of art in a group setting. The Club has an extensive history of supporting the Everson, including financial support for the acquisition of some of the Museum's most iconic pieces, such as Adrian Saxe's Untitled vessel from 1980, which graces the cover of the Museum's American Ceramics catalog. Over the past decade, the Social Art Club's gifts have strengthened the Everson's connections to Central New York through donations of work by indigenous and regional artists.

In a brilliant one-man Beatlemania-esque show, Bob Halligan Jr portrays Paul McCartney through his career as a FAB. Paul has a conversation with the audience—and himself—that inevitably leads back to the songs we so deeply love.

Early on, he receives a visit from John Lennon, who asserts his "creative dominance" of the group. Through the laughter and the tears (and the clothes), Paul traces the band's musical journey and his particular contributions to it, doing so with no backing tracks or help from off/onstage musicians. As group unity frays, he begins to muse about where he might go musically after the break-up. And he even takes requests! The audience participates, and the songs and the man remind us that FAB never goes out of style.

Bob Halligan's own songs have been recorded by Cher, KISS, Michael Bolton, Judas Priest, and he also wrote the hit song "Don't Close Your Eyes" by KIX. He has 9 Gold or Platinum records and his Celtic pop-rock band Ceili Rain has toured internationally for 20 years. Bob is an Adjunct Professor at Syracuse University teaching songwriting, film scoring and the music business. He was recently the only American invited to sing at a Papal event in Italy, and where he met Pope Francis.

Paul the Beatle is a unique, theatrical presentation of the best-known songbook in the last 50 years, complete with sing-alongs and mop-top wigs.

Note: Much of our seating is communal: tables and chairs/barstools and sofas or loveseats. You should expect to share a table or sofa with other attendees.
