The bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, on December 21, 1988 claimed the lives of 270 individuals from 21 nations. Among those lost were 35 students returning home from a semester abroad through Syracuse University. This exhibition of materials donated to the Pan Am Flight 103/Lockerbie Air Disaster by the victims' families, friends, advocates, and affected communities commemorates the 30th anniversary of the tragedy through an exploration of the ways in which the lives of the victims have been remembered. Whether through scholarship, public advocacy, art, or physical memorials, we ensure their lives and the lessons learned from their deaths are not forgotten.

Robert Benjamin: River Walking Light Work Gallery
Price: Free Light Work Gallery
316 Waverly Ave., Syracuse University,
Syracuse
Light Work is pleased to present Robert Benjamin's "River Walking," a solo exhibition of photographs and poems spanning four decades. A self-taught photographer and poet, Benjamin's work, often centered around his family, offers a simple and honest consideration of what it means to live and to love with intention. "I think you have to love your life, and you have to have the courage to find the world beautiful," says Benjamin. Enchanted by color and the beauty of photography itself, Benjamin uncovers poetry in the everyday. Benjamin never wanted a career in photography. He simply felt that he needed to make pictures. According to Benjamin, one of the great joys of being a photographer is working with cameras. He appreciates the elegance of mechanical objects deeply — their feel, their smell, their sound. Cameras are "exquisite little machines" — like typewriters, he says. Benjamin has been writing poems on his Smith-Corona Clipper longer than he's made photographs. His poems echo the sensitivity and humble directness of his photographs. More recently, Benjamin has begun pairing what he aptly calls "small photographs" with "small poems," a selection of which are included in this exhibition.

Arthur Flowers ArtRage Gallery
Price: Free ArtRage Gallery
505 Hawley Ave.,
Syracuse
African American writer, griot and blues singer Arthur Flowers and Indian scroll painter Manu Chitrakar have combined their very distinctive storytelling traditions in an extraordinary literary jam session culminating in a book titled I See the Promised Land: A Life of Martin Luther King Jr. The book was written by Arthur Flowers and illustrated by Manu Chitrakar. Arthur will be at ArtRage to perform this story in musical prose, based on griot oral storytelling traditions, bringing his own perspective to the events he describes. This graphic narrative brings together two diverse yet dramatic traditions of storytelling and Arthur will use the original scroll created by Manu Chitrakar, that carries the tale into the vivid idiom of Patua art, turning King's historic journey into a truly universal legacy. As we see each panel unfurl, we find that I See the Promised Land traverses the milestones of Martin Luther King Jr.'s short life, ministry, and journey as only Arthur Flowers can tell it—replete with destiny and the human condition. The engaging text describes the apartheid South in Martin Luther King's time, which in many ways was not very different from the early days of slavery. Included are descriptions of the Montgomery Bus Boycott; the formation of civil rights groups; mass movements against segregation, such as the Albany Movement and the Children's Crusade in Birmingham, after which King became black America's acknowledged leader; and the influence on King of Gandhi, with his nonviolent approach to resistance. We are told about King's personal struggles as well as the political challenges he faced with the rise of Malcolm X and Black Power. Flowers' text concludes with a brief look at his legacy.

Created for UVP and shot in and around Syracuse, "Terminal Addition" uses local archives, collections, and locations, including the Columbus Monument in downtown Syracuse and the Saltine Warrior on the Syracuse University campus. Is Civility Dead? Strathmore Speakers Series Featuring Dr. Keith Bybee
Price: Free Onondaga Park Fire Barn
W. Colvin St. and Summit Ave.,
Syracuse
Many Americans today worry that politics is killing civility. But the concern over the decline of appropriate conduct runs deeper than the latest tweet or partisan shouting match. Public life, the workplace, and social media all seem to be filled with insult and invective. To understand if civility is really under existential threat, we must consider whether civility is even possible. And if it is possible, we must consider whether civility is desirable. Once we examine the possibility and desirability of civility, we will see that, paradoxically, the very things that make civility appear weak and ineffective, also account for civility's power and appeal. Keith J. Bybee is Vice Dean and Judiciary Studies Professor at the Syracuse University College of Law. Bybee holds tenured appointments in the College of Law and in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. He also directs the Institute for the Study of the Judiciary, Politics, and the Media (IJPM), a collaborative effort between the College of Law, the Maxwell School, and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

The bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, on December 21, 1988 claimed the lives of 270 individuals from 21 nations.

The exhibit will guide visitors through the long and humble beginnings of this adorable character. Learn about the two Helens, both Syracuse University graduates, who worked together to create the Dumbo that we know today. Helen Aberson wrote the original story of Dumbo the Flying Elephant and Helen Durney drew the illustrations. For this special exhibit, OHA has worked in collaboration with the Syracuse University Special Collections, where the original documents are housed due to their connection to the S.U. graduates. Due to the extreme fragility of the pieces, duplicates are used in place of the originals, but the story the pieces tell about the origins and evolution of Dumbo is one every Syracusan should know.

Created for UVP and shot in and around Syracuse, "Terminal Addition" uses local archives, collections, and locations, including the Columbus Monument in downtown Syracuse and the Saltine Warrior on the Syracuse University campus. Donna Colton and Sam Patterelli The 443 Social Club

Gritty, buttery and soul-piercing have all been used to describe the vocals of Donna Colton. A seasoned veteran of the local music scene, her songwriting and CDs have garnered national and international attention. Solo showcases at the legendary Bitter End and Spiral Club in New York City and at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville led to live performances for national TV and radio shows. In 2009 she was one of the few women inducted into the Syracuse Area Music Awards Hall of Fame. Colton will be joined on stage her husband and bandmate, Sam Patterelli, AKA Sam Troublemaker, making music they call an acoustic tangle of Broken Folk and Twang Rock. For the past few years, Colton has been honored to be in CNYSongbirds, Salt City Waltz, Ridgestock and Ladies Night concerts sharing the stage with the most excellent musicians and vocalists in this area.

Hood's rich and folky lead vocals, Green's explosive guitar and mandolin riffs, and their airtight vocal harmonies prompted the Arizona Daily Star to call them "a match made in radio heaven." Ryanhood has collectively performed more than 800 shows in 45 U.S. states, where their cross-generational sound has been equally at home in colleges, coffee-houses, concert halls, churches, and living rooms. And now, 12 years after their street start, Ryanhood's star is still on the rise as they were named "Best Group/Duo" at the 2014 International Acoustic Music Awards, 2017 Falcon Ridge Festival Emerging Artist, and 2018 Falcon Ridge Festival "Most Wanted". They have since relocated back to their hometown of Tucson, AZ, where they have won more than a dozen Tucson Music Awards including "Best Folk Band" and "Best Rock Band" (you can decide for yourself which is most accurate).

Acclaimed as a modern dramatic masterpiece, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is the fabulously inventive tale of Hamlet as told from the worm's-eye view of the bewildered Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two minor characters in Shakespeare's play. In Tom Stoppard's best-known work, this Shakespearean Laurel and Hardy finally get a chance to take the lead role, but do so in a world where echoes of Waiting for Godot resound, where reality and illusion intermix, and where fate leads our two heroes to a tragic but inevitable end.

Created for UVP and shot in and around Syracuse, "Terminal Addition" uses local archives, collections, and locations, including the Columbus Monument in downtown Syracuse and the Saltine Warrior on the Syracuse University campus. The exhibition will be on view on the north facade of the Everson Museum of Art from dusk until 11:00 pm.

An Evening with Jeffrey Gaines The 443 Social Club
Price: $20 in advance, $25 at the door if available The 443 Social Club
443 Burnet Ave.,
Syracuse
Jeffrey Gaines has been heralded for his soul-searching lyrics and his powerful live performances. With only his voice and a guitar for accompaniment, Jeffrey Gaines has earned a reputation as a captivating performer, entertaining audiences everywhere he goes. Raised in Harrisburg, PA by parents more inclined to spin soul classics by Aretha and Otis than the New Wave and Brit Rock blasting from their son's room, a teenaged Gaines began singing and playing guitar in several local garage bands. He soon decided to set out on his own and quickly landed a record deal, releasing Jeffrey Gaines, the first of his five studio releases. The album garnered four stars from The Philadelphia Inquirer. Somewhat Slightly Dazed, and Galore followed. Jeffrey Gaines released Always Be (Artemis) to both critical and commercial praise. Featuring his emotional interpretation of "In Your Eyes" and his own soaringly beautiful "Always Be," the album hit #5 on R&R Callout America CHR/Pop list, also reaching #45 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart. Note: Much of our seating is communal – tables and chairs/barstools and sofas/loveseats. You should expect to share a table or sofa with other attendees.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead Central New York Playhouse Alyssa Otoski Keim, director
CNY Playhouse
Shoppingtown Mall, Entrance No. 4 (adjacent to parking garage),
Dewitt

From the Vault: Dumbo First Took Flight in Syracuse Onondaga Historical Association
Price: Free Onondaga Historical Association
321 Montgomery St.,
Syracuse

Whether we are healing or celebrating, the visual arts and music speak to our personal experiences and the connection we have to each other. It is only natural that the visual artist be directly influenced by melody and rhythm.
