Americans Who Tell the Truth: Models of Courageous Citizenship

Not only is noted painter Robert Shetterly coming to Syracuse University, he is bringing along the full collection of his masterwork portrait series "Americans Who Tell the Truth: Models of Courageous Citizenship," which marks the first time ever all 235 pieces will be displayed publicly in one location.

The portraits and accompanying narratives highlight citizens who courageously address issues of social, environmental and economic fairness. Combining art and other media, the series "offers resources to inspire a new generation of engaged Americans who will act for the common good, our communities, and the Earth."

Among the historical and contemporary figures portrayed in the collection are Muhammad Ali, Susan B. Anthony, James Baldwin, Majora Carter, Shirley Chisholm, Dwight Eisenhower, Langston Hughes, Van Jones, Martin Luther King Jr., Naomi Klein, Ron Kovic, Oren Lyons '58, Arthur Miller, Ralph Nader, Paul Robeson, Edward Snowden, Mark Twain, Walt Whitman and Malcolm X.

Shetterly taught himself drawing, printmaking and painting after graduating from Harvard College with a degree in English literature. His work appears in collections across the United States and Europe. Along with his "Americans Who Tell the Truth" series, Shetterly is well known for his series of 70 painted etchings based on William Blake's "Proverbs of Hell" and for another series of 50 painted etchings reflecting on the metaphor of the Annunciation.

He began "Americans Who Tell the Truth" in the early 2000s. A book by the same name and featuring his first 50 portraits was published in 2008. Shetterly says the portraits have given him an opportunity to speak with children and adults throughout the United States about "the necessity of dissent in a democracy, the obligations of citizenship, sustainability, U.S. history, and how democracy cannot function if politicians don't tell the truth, if the media don't report it, and if the people don't demand it."

The bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, on December 21, 1988 claimed the lives of 270 individuals from 21 nations. Among those lost were 35 students returning home from a semester abroad through Syracuse University. This exhibition of materials donated to the Pan Am Flight 103/Lockerbie Air Disaster by the victims' families, friends, advocates, and affected communities commemorates the 30th anniversary of the tragedy through an exploration of the ways in which the lives of the victims have been remembered. Whether through scholarship, public advocacy, art, or physical memorials, we ensure their lives and the lessons learned from their deaths are not forgotten.

"in the clearing.", curated by Evan Starling-Davis, is a multidisciplinary art installation exploring the emotional ripple effects of individuals residing within systemic gun violence of America's Rust Belt region. Interrogating the extremities of a community, the ensemble of work combines elements of literature, video art, collage, painting, and audio clippings to framework a sensoria of storytelling— or the sum of one's perception to interpret environment via staged narrative.

Keisha Scarville's primary theme is the relationship between transformation and the unknown. Grounded in photography, she works across media to explore place, absence, and subjectivity.

After the death of her mother in 2015, Keisha Scarville deepened her use of photography as a way to explore how the loss of such an anchor point can affect one's identity and sense of both absence and self in the world. Scarville's exhibition presents a selection of photographs whose larger subject is transformation born of loss. In working with Alma's richly patterned clothing and possessions, Scarville states she looks for ways to visually conjure her mother's presence.

Ceramic tiles are one of the world's oldest decorative art forms, dating back to at least the fourth millennium BCE. Tiles served both an ornamental and functional purpose, covering interior and exterior building surfaces as well as tabletops and other pieces of furniture.

The Everson's expansive ceramics collection includes over 500 tiles made in countries around the world between the 17th and 20th centuries. This exhibition presents a selection of these tiles, many of which have never before been on view.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Everson building, "Visions of America" showcases the depth of the Everson's collection of American art. In 1911, the Everson (then known as the Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts) made history as the first museum in the country to declare that it would collect only work made by American artists, a decision which led to the acquisition of many important works that are today beloved by Everson visitors. This exhibition features many of these visitor favorites, including work by Edward Hicks, Eastman Johnson, Frederick Remington, Adelaide Alsop Robineau, and Gilbert Stuart.

Syracuse artist Ellen M. Blalock is an accomplished multi-disciplinary artist who is known for her photography, video, and fiber art. Ellen connects with the rich history of fiber arts found throughout the African Diaspora and her work is part of the African American quilting tradition of story quilts. Stitching Stories includes a broad array of her quilting work from the past 20 years as well as the first three quilts from a new series of work dealing with mental health in the African American community.

Keisha Scarville's primary theme is the relationship between transformation and the unknown. Grounded in photography, she works across media to explore place, absence, and subjectivity.

After the death of her mother in 2015, Keisha Scarville deepened her use of photography as a way to explore how the loss of such an anchor point can affect one's identity and sense of both absence and self in the world. Scarville's exhibition presents a selection of photographs whose larger subject is transformation born of loss. In working with Alma's richly patterned clothing and possessions, Scarville states she looks for ways to visually conjure her mother's presence.

Everyone is excited to see him and no one more so than his number one reindeer fan, Peppermint (her friends call her Pepper), who is hoping to get his autograph.

Unfortunately, Dasher has a secret problem. It seems that amidst all of the glamour of being a holiday celebrity, Dasher has lost his ability to fly! As Christmas approaches and everyone is counting on him to lead the way, it looks like he doesn't have enough Christmas spirit to guide the sleigh. It looks like Christmas may be cancelled, but with the help of Pepper and a couple of very lost penguins, Dasher will remember what the holiday season is all about and the Spirit of Christmas will prevail.

Americans Who Tell the Truth: Models of Courageous Citizenship

Not only is noted painter Robert Shetterly coming to Syracuse University, he is bringing along the full collection of his masterwork portrait series "Americans Who Tell the Truth: Models of Courageous Citizenship," which marks the first time ever all 235 pieces will be displayed publicly in one location.

The portraits and accompanying narratives highlight citizens who courageously address issues of social, environmental and economic fairness. Combining art and other media, the series "offers resources to inspire a new generation of engaged Americans who will act for the common good, our communities, and the Earth."

Among the historical and contemporary figures portrayed in the collection are Muhammad Ali, Susan B. Anthony, James Baldwin, Majora Carter, Shirley Chisholm, Dwight Eisenhower, Langston Hughes, Van Jones, Martin Luther King Jr., Naomi Klein, Ron Kovic, Oren Lyons '58, Arthur Miller, Ralph Nader, Paul Robeson, Edward Snowden, Mark Twain, Walt Whitman and Malcolm X.

Shetterly taught himself drawing, printmaking and painting after graduating from Harvard College with a degree in English literature. His work appears in collections across the United States and Europe. Along with his "Americans Who Tell the Truth" series, Shetterly is well known for his series of 70 painted etchings based on William Blake's "Proverbs of Hell" and for another series of 50 painted etchings reflecting on the metaphor of the Annunciation.

He began "Americans Who Tell the Truth" in the early 2000s. A book by the same name and featuring his first 50 portraits was published in 2008. Shetterly says the portraits have given him an opportunity to speak with children and adults throughout the United States about "the necessity of dissent in a democracy, the obligations of citizenship, sustainability, U.S. history, and how democracy cannot function if politicians don't tell the truth, if the media don't report it, and if the people don't demand it."

"Art Within Art: The Everson at 50" commemorates the 50th anniversary of architect I.M. Pei's landmark Everson Museum of Art. The exhibition and associated programming explore Pei's radical notion that the structure of a museum is as important as the art it contains, a belief that directly impacts curatorial choices in both art and programs. Including never-before-seen plans, photographs, models, ephemera, and archival materials alongside selected artworks from the Everson's collection, "Art Within Art" examines the aesthetic and conceptual similarities between Pei's building and the art it houses, revealing the lasting impact of great architecture.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Everson building, "Visions of America" showcases the depth of the Everson's collection of American art. In 1911, the Everson (then known as the Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts) made history as the first museum in the country to declare that it would collect only work made by American artists, a decision which led to the acquisition of many important works that are today beloved by Everson visitors. This exhibition features many of these visitor favorites, including work by Edward Hicks, Eastman Johnson, Frederick Remington, Adelaide Alsop Robineau, and Gilbert Stuart.

Ceramic tiles are one of the world's oldest decorative art forms, dating back to at least the fourth millennium BCE. Tiles served both an ornamental and functional purpose, covering interior and exterior building surfaces as well as tabletops and other pieces of furniture.

The Everson's expansive ceramics collection includes over 500 tiles made in countries around the world between the 17th and 20th centuries. This exhibition presents a selection of these tiles, many of which have never before been on view.

Americans Who Tell the Truth: Models of Courageous Citizenship

Not only is noted painter Robert Shetterly coming to Syracuse University, he is bringing along the full collection of his masterwork portrait series "Americans Who Tell the Truth: Models of Courageous Citizenship," which marks the first time ever all 235 pieces will be displayed publicly in one location.

The portraits and accompanying narratives highlight citizens who courageously address issues of social, environmental and economic fairness. Combining art and other media, the series "offers resources to inspire a new generation of engaged Americans who will act for the common good, our communities, and the Earth."

Among the historical and contemporary figures portrayed in the collection are Muhammad Ali, Susan B. Anthony, James Baldwin, Majora Carter, Shirley Chisholm, Dwight Eisenhower, Langston Hughes, Van Jones, Martin Luther King Jr., Naomi Klein, Ron Kovic, Oren Lyons '58, Arthur Miller, Ralph Nader, Paul Robeson, Edward Snowden, Mark Twain, Walt Whitman and Malcolm X.

Shetterly taught himself drawing, printmaking and painting after graduating from Harvard College with a degree in English literature. His work appears in collections across the United States and Europe. Along with his "Americans Who Tell the Truth" series, Shetterly is well known for his series of 70 painted etchings based on William Blake's "Proverbs of Hell" and for another series of 50 painted etchings reflecting on the metaphor of the Annunciation.

He began "Americans Who Tell the Truth" in the early 2000s. A book by the same name and featuring his first 50 portraits was published in 2008. Shetterly says the portraits have given him an opportunity to speak with children and adults throughout the United States about "the necessity of dissent in a democracy, the obligations of citizenship, sustainability, U.S. history, and how democracy cannot function if politicians don't tell the truth, if the media don't report it, and if the people don't demand it."

After the death of her mother in 2015, Keisha Scarville deepened her use of photography as a way to explore how the loss of such an anchor point can affect one's identity and sense of both absence and self in the world. Scarville's exhibition presents a selection of photographs whose larger subject is transformation born of loss. In working with Alma's richly patterned clothing and possessions, Scarville states she looks for ways to visually conjure her mother's presence.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Everson building, "Visions of America" showcases the depth of the Everson's collection of American art. In 1911, the Everson (then known as the Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts) made history as the first museum in the country to declare that it would collect only work made by American artists, a decision which led to the acquisition of many important works that are today beloved by Everson visitors. Ceramic tiles are one of the world's oldest decorative art forms, dating back to at least the fourth millennium BCE. Tiles served both an ornamental and functional purpose, covering interior and exterior building surfaces as well as tabletops and other pieces of furniture.

The Everson's expansive ceramics collection includes over 500 tiles made in countries around the world between the 17th and 20th centuries. This exhibition presents a selection of these tiles, many of which have never before been on view.

Americans Who Tell the Truth: Models of Courageous Citizenship

Not only is noted painter Robert Shetterly coming to Syracuse University, he is bringing along the full collection of his masterwork portrait series "Americans Who Tell the Truth: Models of Courageous Citizenship," which marks the first time ever all 235 pieces will be displayed publicly in one location.

The portraits and accompanying narratives highlight citizens who courageously address issues of social, environmental and economic fairness. Combining art and other media, the series "offers resources to inspire a new generation of engaged Americans who will act for the common good, our communities, and the Earth."

Among the historical and contemporary figures portrayed in the collection are Muhammad Ali, Susan B. Anthony, James Baldwin, Majora Carter, Shirley Chisholm, Dwight Eisenhower, Langston Hughes, Van Jones, Martin Luther King Jr., Naomi Klein, Ron Kovic, Oren Lyons '58, Arthur Miller, Ralph Nader, Paul Robeson, Edward Snowden, Mark Twain, Walt Whitman and Malcolm X.

Shetterly taught himself drawing, printmaking and painting after graduating from Harvard College with a degree in English literature. His work appears in collections across the United States and Europe. Along with his "Americans Who Tell the Truth" series, Shetterly is well known for his series of 70 painted etchings based on William Blake's "Proverbs of Hell" and for another series of 50 painted etchings reflecting on the metaphor of the Annunciation.

He began "Americans Who Tell the Truth" in the early 2000s. A book by the same name and featuring his first 50 portraits was published in 2008. Shetterly says the portraits have given him an opportunity to speak with children and adults throughout the United States about "the necessity of dissent in a democracy, the obligations of citizenship, sustainability, U.S. history, and how democracy cannot function if politicians don't tell the truth, if the media don't report it, and if the people don't demand it."

The bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, on December 21, 1988 claimed the lives of 270 individuals from 21 nations. Among those lost were 35 students returning home from a semester abroad through Syracuse University. This exhibition of materials donated to the Pan Am Flight 103/Lockerbie Air Disaster by the victims' families, friends, advocates, and affected communities commemorates the 30th anniversary of the tragedy through an exploration of the ways in which the lives of the victims have been remembered. Whether through scholarship, public advocacy, art, or physical memorials, we ensure their lives and the lessons learned from their deaths are not forgotten.

Interrogating the extremities of a community, the ensemble of work combines elements of literature, video art, collage, painting, and audio clippings to framework a sensoria of storytelling— or the sum of one's perception to interpret environment via staged narrative.

Keisha Scarville's primary theme is the relationship between transformation and the unknown. Grounded in photography, she works across media to explore place, absence, and subjectivity.

After the death of her mother in 2015, Keisha Scarville deepened her use of photography as a way to explore how the loss of such an anchor point can affect one's identity and sense of both absence and self in the world. Scarville's exhibition presents a selection of photographs whose larger subject is transformation born of loss. In working with Alma's richly patterned clothing and possessions, Scarville states she looks for ways to visually conjure her mother's presence.

Including never-before-seen plans, photographs, models, ephemera, and archival materials alongside selected artworks from the Everson's collection, "Art Within Art" examines the aesthetic and conceptual similarities between Pei's building and the art it houses, revealing the lasting impact of great architecture.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Everson building, "Visions of America" showcases the depth of the Everson's collection of American art. In 1911, the Everson (then known as the Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts) made history as the first museum in the country to declare that it would collect only work made by American artists, a decision which led to the acquisition of many important works that are today beloved by Everson visitors. This exhibition features many of these visitor favorites, including work by Edward Hicks, Eastman Johnson, Frederick Remington, Adelaide Alsop Robineau, and Gilbert Stuart.

Ceramic tiles are one of the world's oldest decorative art forms, dating back to at least the fourth millennium BCE. Tiles served both an ornamental and functional purpose, covering interior and exterior building surfaces as well as tabletops and other pieces of furniture.

The Everson's expansive ceramics collection includes over 500 tiles made in countries around the world between the 17th and 20th centuries. This exhibition presents a selection of these tiles, many of which have never before been on view.
