Whether through scholarship, public advocacy, art, or physical memorials, we ensure their lives and the lessons learned from their deaths are not forgotten.

Robert Benjamin: River Walking
Light Work Gallery

Price: Free
Light Work Gallery
316 Waverly Ave., Syracuse University, Syracuse

Light Work is pleased to present Robert Benjamin's "River Walking," a solo exhibition of photographs and poems spanning four decades. A self-taught photographer and poet, Benjamin's work, often centered around his family, offers a simple and honest consideration of what it means to live and to love with intention. "I think you have to love your life, and you have to have the courage to find the world beautiful," says Benjamin. Enchanted by color and the beauty of photography itself, Benjamin uncovers poetry in the everyday.

Benjamin never wanted a career in photography. He simply felt that he needed to make pictures. According to Benjamin, one of the great joys of being a photographer is working with cameras. He appreciates the elegance of mechanical objects deeply — their feel, their smell, their sound. Cameras are "exquisite little machines" — like typewriters, he says. Benjamin has been writing poems on his Smith-Corona Clipper longer than he's made photographs. His poems echo the sensitivity and humble directness of his photographs. More recently, Benjamin has begun pairing what he aptly calls "small photographs" with "small poems," a selection of which are included in this exhibition.

How Does Jazz Survive (and Thrive)?
Syracuse University College of Arts and Sciences
Featuring Larry Blumenfeld and Larry Luttinger

Lender Auditorium, Whitman School of Management
Syracuse University, Syracuse

Long past its moment at the forefront of popular culture, jazz finds itself in a challenged space. The club circuit is fading, the music business in disrepair. What makes for a sustainable jazz scene? Blumenfeld considers this question in local and national terms, along with guest speaker, Larry Luttinger, of CNY Jazz.

Larry Blumenfeld is a culture reporter, music critic and lecturer, who writes regularly for The Wall Street Journal, and has contributed to many newspapers, magazines, scholarly essay collections and websites. His work focuses on jazz and Afro-Latin music, and on the intersections between culture, politics and activism. He curates Spoleto Festival USA's jazz series; the Deer Isle Jazz Festival in Stonington, Maine; and the National Jazz Museum in Harlem's series, 'Jazz and Social Justice.'

Pride and Prejudice
Syracuse Stage
Jason O'Connell, director

Archbold Theater, Syracuse Stage
820 E. Genesee St., Syracuse

In the age of The Crown and Victoria, we go back to the Anglophile source with Kate Hamill's playful adaptation of Jane Austen's classic romance, Pride and Prejudice. The outspoken Elizabeth Bennet faces mounting pressure from her status-conscious mother to secure a suitable marriage. But is marriage suitable for a woman of Elizabeth's intelligence and independence? Especially when the irritating, aloof, self-involved ... tall, vaguely handsome, mildly amusing, and impossibly aristocratic Mr. Darcy keeps popping up at every turn? What? Why are you looking at us like that? Literature's greatest tale of latent love has never felt so theatrical, or so full of life than it does in this effervescent new adaptation. Hey, Jane Austen could show these upstart hipsters a thing or two.

From the Vault: Dumbo First Took Flight in Syracuse
Onondaga Historical Association

Price: Free
Onondaga Historical Association
321 Montgomery St., Syracuse

The exhibit will guide visitors through the long and humble beginnings of this adorable character. Learn about the two Helens, both Syracuse University graduates, who worked together to create the Dumbo that we know today. Helen Aberson wrote the original story of Dumbo the Flying Elephant and Helen Durney drew the illustrations.

For this special exhibit, OHA has worked in collaboration with the Syracuse University Special Collections, where the original documents are housed due to their connection to the S.U. graduates. Due to the extreme fragility of the pieces, duplicates are used in place of the originals, but the story the pieces tell about the origins and evolution of Dumbo is one every Syracusan should know.

She Played it Like That: Jazz Listening Party with Belfer Archives
Syracuse University College of Arts and Sciences
Featuring Linda May Han Oh and Larry Blumenfeld

Bird Library, Peter Graham Scholarly Commons
Syracuse University, Syracuse

The music of female composers, arrangers, performers and bandleaders has always shaped jazz and its context. Yet it can now be heard and considered anew, in light of a changed consciousness surrounding gender and identity as they relate to culture. This listening party, jointly-hosted and co-curated by Larry and Linda, with assistance from Belfer Archives, celebrates and investigates that legacy.

Born in Malaysia and raised in Perth, Western Australia, Linda May Han Oh is an active bassist and composer who has performed with the likes of Dave Douglas, Joe Lovano, Geri Allen, Terri Lyne Carrington and Pat Metheny. She teaches in the jazz program of The New School, and is a founding member of We Have Voice, a collective whose mission and activity "is centered around developing an understanding of, and working toward equity and the creation of, safe(r) spaces in the performing arts." Among her many awards is a 2019 Chamber Music America New Jazz Works Commission. Her fifth album as a bandleader, "Aventurine," will be released on Biophilia Records in May.

"Gangsterism" on Campus: A Conversation About Jazz, Race and Creative Intent
Syracuse University College of Arts and Sciences
Featuring Larry Blumenfeld and Jason Moran

Hendricks Chapel
Syracuse University, Syracuse

Larry Blumenfeld is a culture reporter, music critic and lecturer, who writes regularly for The Wall Street Journal, and has contributed to many newspapers, magazines, scholarly essay collections and websites. His work focuses on jazz and Afro-Latin music, and on the intersections between culture, politics and activism. He curates Spoleto Festival USA's jazz series; the Deer Isle Jazz Festival in Stonington, Maine; and the National Jazz Museum in Harlem's series, 'Jazz and Social Justice.'

Since his arrival on the music scene in the 1990s, Jason Moran has established himself as a restless innovator and a guardian of traditions, a singular leader and a selfless collaborator, and an artist and thinker bent on re-imagining jazz culture and its connections to wider worlds. His music spans ensembles of many forms, symphony orchestras and film scores. He has worked with celebrated visual artists including Carrie Mae Weems, Adrian Piper and Kara Walker, and mounted exhibitions of his own visual art. As the Kennedy Center's artistic director for jazz, as at museums and other arts institutions, he has reconsidered the presenter's mission. For the title of his series of "Gangsterism" compositions, Moran lifted a term off the canvas of Jean-Michel Basquiat's painting "Hollywood Africans."

For this program, Blumenfeld extends a dialogue that has stretched across three decades and spilled out in many articles. Following the conversation, Moran performs solo at the piano.

An Intimate Evening with Dusty Pas'cal & Loren Barrigar
The 443 Social Club

Price: $15 in advance, $20 at the door if available
The 443 Social Club
443 Burnet Ave., Syracuse

Dusty Pas'cal Singer-songwriter albums are excellent for trips into the human psyche—not just of the artist, but also of ourselves. Dusty Pas'cal's sincere, warm and honest songwriting communicates effectively through brutal, yet beautifully transparent lyrics and instrumentation that varies from stark guitar to layers of bass, drums, fiddle, piano, pedal steel, additional vocals and more. Pas'cal is a faithful student of the greats he covers, from Kris Kristofferson and Bob Dylan. His wisdom, perhaps partially gained as a husband and the father of five, is apparent in his songs. The lyrics communicate the ideas with openness that allows interpretation.

For his latest album, Human Heart (2016), Pas'cal lined up some of the area's best musicians for this album, including Nick Piccininni, Loren Barrigar, John Dancks, Greg Hoover and John Hannis, and Amanda Rogers, and also notes Subcat Studios engineers Jon Lessels and Jeremy Johnston's important contributions. Yet Pas'cal is the glue that helped make this perfect project come together. Each song is a gem, from the ear-perking poetic lyrics of "Sundried Heart" to the powerful climax of "40 Mile". "I like it better when you can hear little inconsistencies like the 'pop' of a guitar string or something. I've always just had a real appreciation for the honesty of the music. I like to think of my albums as a sequence of life," he explained. "So 20 years from now, I can always look back ask them songs to remind me what was happening in my life at that time." – Jess Novak Syracuse NewTimes.

Loren Barrigar started playing guitar when he was only four years old, and by the time he was six, played the Chet Atkins hit "Yackety Axe" in front of thousands of country music fans at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. He went on to study with Jimmy Atkins (Chet's brother) which led to a touring career with his family band from Nashville to Las Vegas. Since settling down in Central New York, he has been in constant demand as a studio musician.

Loren's finely-honed songwriting skills have launched his melodies on NBC's #1 rated show "ER", "The Young and The Restless" and on a Christmas CD with BB King and Patti Labelle. He has performed with some of the best acoustic players in the world including Stephen Bennett, Richard Smith, John Knowles, Muriel Anderson and Loren's friend and mentor Tommy Emmanuel, the Australian guitar sensation. He has also recorded with Multiple Grammy winner and legendary producer Lloyd Maines.

In 2010, Loren made a guest appearance at The Chet Atkins Appreciation Society {CAAS} in Nashville with his pickin' pal from New Zealand, Mark Mazengarb. His solo concerts include favorite songs from seven decades, as well as his originals all featuring exciting guitar work and memorable vocal stylings.

Everson Museum of Art

Everson Museum of Art
401 Harrison St., Syracuse

Founded in 1923, the Scholastic Art Awards are the nation's longest-running and most prestigious educational initiative supporting student achievement in the arts. Every year, students across the country in grades 7-12 are invited to enter original works of art in regional competitions. This year, over 2,500 students representing over 100 Central New York schools submitted 5,673 works of art, which was then judged by professional artists, educators, and photographers. The judges award first place (Gold Key), second place (Silver Key), honorable mentions, and special award honorees. Gold Key winners move on to compete at the national level, while a small selection of the Silver Key winners are displayed at the Everson.

"Key Figures" examines the larger-than-life artists who shaped an art movement, and features select works from a new generation of artists who are building on this legacy by using the figure to explore identity, narrative, and allegory.

Pride and Prejudice
