Eddie Dominguez: Garden of Eden
Everson Museum of Art

Everson Museum of Art
401 Harrison St., Syracuse

The youngest of eight children, Eddie Dominguez grew up in Tucumcari, New Mexico, between Albuquerque and Amarillo on historic Route 66. He came to national prominence in the mid–1980s for highly stylized dinnerware sets that also stack into sculptural forms. In his work, Dominguez frequently references his home state's vegetation, landforms, weather, and Hispano–Catholic culture. The dual nature of Dominguez's objects, which inhabit the gray area between utility and art for art's sake, reflects his personal experience as a New Mexican who studied ceramics in the Anglo–dominated East: whether we see "art" or "craft," local Hispano or melting pot American depends completely on the immediate context.

Time Returns: A Continuous Now
Everson Museum of Art

Everson Museum of Art
401 Harrison St., Syracuse

"Time Returns: A Continuous Now" presents a cross section of photographs that span the early 20th century through 2019. In our current moment of peaked social activism and political engagement, the exhibition suggests new connections among seemingly disparate topics such as the horrors of war, the impact of the Anthropocene, shifting identities, and the necessity of intimacy. "Time Returns: A Continuous Now" features work rife with immediacy by artists living through tumultuous times that reevaluate societal divisions and reinforce the relevance and power of photography today. Co-curated by artist Judy Natal and the Everson's Curator of Art & Programs DJ Hellerman, the exhibition is assembled from the collections of the Everson Museum and Light Work.

This Victorian Era and Arts & Crafts exhibit will highlight several of Syracuse's major contributors to the Arts and Crafts movement, 1900-1920s, as well as feature many fine examples of period clothing, architecture, and furniture of the Victorian Era in Syracuse, 1837-1901.

In many respects, the Arts and Crafts movement was a rebuke of the ornate styling, designs, and increasing mechanization of production in the Victorian period. The displays will allow for museum patrons to see these contrasting styles up close.

Robert Benjamin: River Walking
Light Work Gallery

Price: Free
Light Work Gallery
316 Waverly Ave., Syracuse University, Syracuse

Light Work is pleased to present Robert Benjamin's "River Walking," a solo exhibition of photographs and poems spanning four decades. A self-taught photographer and poet, Benjamin's work, often centered around his family, offers a simple and honest consideration of what it means to live and to love with intention. "I think you have to love your life, and you have to have the courage to find the world beautiful," says Benjamin. Enchanted by color and the beauty of photography itself, Benjamin uncovers poetry in the everyday.

Benjamin never wanted a career in photography. He simply felt that he needed to make pictures. According to Benjamin, one of the great joys of being a photographer is working with cameras. He appreciates the elegance of mechanical objects deeply — their feel, their smell, their sound. Cameras are "exquisite little machines" — like typewriters, he says. Benjamin has been writing poems on his Smith-Corona Clipper longer than he's made photographs. His poems echo the sensitivity and humble directness of his photographs. More recently, Benjamin has begun pairing what he aptly calls "small photographs" with "small poems," a selection of which are included in this exhibition.

Opening: About-Face: 50 years after Stonewall. The Paintings of Joe Radoccia
ArtRage Gallery

Price: Free
ArtRage Gallery
505 Hawley Ave., Syracuse

There will be an opening reception this evening 6:00-8:00 pm.

The oversized portraits in this exhibition represent the hard-won freedom to be present, to be as out and visible and large as desired. The scale acknowledges the magnitude of the About-Face in attitudes and acceptance that has unfolded in the 50 years since Stonewall. They claim space in an open environment that did not exist when we were born, that did not exist for most of our lives, and that many of us thought we would never live to experience.

This exhibit is intended as an invitation to enter an intimate conversation with LGBTQ elders, with a few younger voices. And to pause, for a visual musing on the passing of time and our unfolding changes.

The Cadleys
The 443 Social Club

Price: $10 in advance, $15 at the door (if available)
The 443 Social Club
443 Burnet Ave., Syracuse

The Cadleys are one of the most popular acoustic bands in the Northeast. Following in the tradition of great male-female duets like George Jones and Tammy Wynette, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, and Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons, John and Cathy show how two voices blended in seamless harmony can produce one very powerful sound.

In concert you'll hear The Cadleys perform everything from traditional mountain ballads and bluegrass classics like "Bury Me Beneath the Willow" and Bill Monroe's "Blue and Lonesome," to Alison Krauss' "The Lucky One," to the Louvin Brother's "Cash on the Barrelhead," to Cathy's knockout version of "Over the Rainbow." You'll also hear some innovative acoustic arrangements of favorite Beatles tunes like "I Will,"plus a generous sampling of John's original songs, many of which have been recorded by national bluegrass artists like Jim Hurst, Missy Raines, Tony Trischka, Amy Gallatin, and Lou Reid, who took John's song "Time" to the #1 spot on the national bluegrass charts.

Rounding out the band is first-call veteran bassist John Dancks, a member of the Syracuse Area Music Hall of Fame, and Perry Cleaveland, one of the most in-demand mandolin players in Upstate New York. Perry's virtuoso playing has been featured in just about every prominent acoustic act in the area, recorded and live, bluegrass and otherwise.

In short, a live show by The Cadleys does everything audiences come to a concert for: great singing, solid musicianship, entertaining rapport, and the feeling that they've enjoyed a truly special night of music.

This is a "listening room" style show. Before the performance begins you will be asked to silence your phone, limit conversation and focus 100% on the artist. We do not have televisions in the room and we limit noise from the bar as much as possible while the artists are on stage.

About-Face: 50 years after Stonewall. The Paintings of Joe Radoccia
ArtRage Gallery

Price: Free
ArtRage Gallery
505 Hawley Ave., Syracuse

Griffin House Album Release Tour with Brian Elmquist of The Lone Bellow
The 443 Social Club

Price: $22 in advance, $25 at the door (if available)
The 443 Social Club
443 Burnet Ave., Syracuse

"Rising Star" is not a phrase one would normally use to describe an artist like Griffin House, who has been touring for more than 15 years and has recorded over 12 studio albums.

The title of House's upcoming release, Rising Star, references the first track on the album which tells the story of a character who moves to Music City, like so many do, with a guitar and a dream. Although not intended to be autobiographical, the listener gets the sense that this comical and fictitious tale could hardly have been woven by someone without a similar life experience to the protagonist in Rising Star.

Indeed, House's story began in much the same way. Moving to Nashville as a young man in 2003 with not much more than a guitar and a handful of songs, he took a part time job downtown at a Broadway gift shop, biding his time before he caught his big break. That big break came after just a few months, in the form of a phone call from Island Def Jam Records, which jumpstarted his career and led to him signing with CAA and Nettwerk Records.

After that, things happened quickly for House. His 2004 debut album Lost and Found was lauded by music critics such as Bill Flanagan (Executive VP MTV/VH1 Networks) who featured House on the CBS Sunday Morning show as one of the "best emerging songwriters." He began touring, opening for acts like John Mellencamp and The Cranberries, and found himself meeting people like Bruce Springsteen and Willie Nelson. By all accounts, House seemed poised to be more of an "overnight success" rather than a "rising star"… but that's not exactly how things turned out. "I've been a "rising star" for the past 15 years" House jokes, "It's a slow rise."

Although House has enjoyed plenty of success as national headliner for over a decade and has earned a great deal of respect as a well-known performer and singer-songwriter, he seems to not take himself or his career in the music industry too seriously.

Now married, sober, and a father, House has learned to balance his career by making his family and his sobriety his first priority. He pays tribute to his wife and children with When The Kids Are Gone, a song about watching his daughters grow up and imagining he and his wife as empty nesters.

Richard III
Syracuse Shakespeare-in-the-Park
Mike King, director

Price: Free (donations accepted)
Thornden Park Amphitheater
Ostrom Ave., Syracuse

Richard III is considered the first of Shakespeare's great dramas. Shakespeare used multiple sources to create one of his most evil characters who certainly ordered the death of a king but may not have been quite as maleficent in real life as he is portrayed in the play. The question of the extent of his "deformity" is also widely debated. What do you think? Was he the hunchbacked monster with a shriveled arm or was he slightly to moderately stooped which made his arm appear shriveled? With the backdrop of the War of the Roses, the play centers on Richard's seizure of power in 1483, his short reign as king and his violent end on the battlefield searching madly for his horse.

$25 premium tickets include a front-row lawn chair seat, $10 of food of your choice from Beer Belly Deli, and Gannon's Isle ice cream at intermission.
